During its first General Assembly on 17 December, the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Association elected Karel Luyben as its first President. Karel Luyben (Rector Magnificus Emeritus of Delft University of Technology) has been elected following a nomination supported by CESAER (association of universities of science and technology in Europe), in response to an open call for candidates. Letters of Endorsements for his nomination were issued by the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA), the European University Association (EUA), the League of European Research Universities (LERU), Science Europe and The Guild.

The EOSC Association was established as a legal entity on 29th July 2020 with four founding members: GÉANT, CESAER, CSIC and GARR. The Association will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Commission to progress the EOSC partnership, which will bring together all relevant stakeholders to co-design and deploy a European Research Data Commons where data are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR), and also as open as possible.
